🧭Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT)

You don't need to solve the whole problem. You need to know what's different when it's a bit better.

Solution-Focused Brief Therapy in the UK

SFBT is a brief, practical talking therapy that spends most of its time on where you want to get to, not on how you got stuck. Built around the miracle question and scaling questions, it's typically the shortest talking therapy on offer. You are already doing some of what you need to do more of. SFBT starts by finding it, not by finding what's wrong.

"Have you ever sat in a first session and dreaded being asked to go all the way back to the beginning?"

When talking about the problem doesn't move you past it

Some difficulties benefit from being unpicked in detail: where a pattern came from, what it protected you from, why it still fires. Other times, you already know roughly what's wrong, you've talked about it plenty, and going over it again just rehearses it rather than resolving it.

You might have a specific, practical goal - sleeping again, getting through a work week without dread, a difficult conversation with a parent or partner you keep putting off - and what you actually want is help getting there, not a long excavation of why it's hard.

There's nothing wrong with wanting that. It doesn't mean your difficulty is trivial. It means what would help most right now is a therapy built to move, not one built to dwell.

SFBT starts from where you want to be

Solution-Focused Brief Therapy assumes you already have resources and past successes to draw on, even if the current difficulty is hiding them. Instead of mapping the problem in depth, your therapist asks what a better day looks like in concrete detail, then works backwards from that picture to what's already partly happening and what would need to happen next. Sessions are structured, goal-led, and designed to end - most courses run somewhere between one and eight sessions.

Imagine measuring progress instead of just feeling stuck

Being able to say 'that's a 6 out of 10 this week, it was a 4 last month' and knowing exactly what moved it. Noticing the mornings that already go slightly better and doing more of whatever's different on those mornings. Leaving each session with a small, specific next step rather than a longer list of things that are wrong with you.

Why SFBT works

It trades depth for speed and direction, which is exactly right for some problems and the wrong tool for others.

Genuinely brief by design

SFBT is one of the shortest structured talking therapies available. Many courses run five to eight sessions, and some single-session models exist for well-defined, time-limited problems. You and your therapist agree early what 'better' looks like, so you both know when the work is done.

Built around two simple, repeatable tools

The miracle question and scaling questions give SFBT a clear, learnable structure. You don't need to have language for what's wrong; you need to be able to describe, even loosely, what a better version of tomorrow looks like.

Strengths-first, not problem-first

Rather than treating you as a set of deficits to fix, SFBT looks for exceptions - the moments the problem is already less present - and for the skills and resources that produced them. For people who find problem-focused therapy draining or repetitive, this can feel like a different kind of conversation entirely.

How SFBT works in practice

A typical course of SFBT is short enough that most of the structure fits inside the first session or two.

We stay in touch through every step
1

A brief, forward-looking opening

Your therapist will ask what you want to be different, rather than asking you to describe the problem at length. Enough context to understand what you're facing, but the emphasis shifts quickly to where you're trying to get to.

2

The miracle question

A version of: 'suppose tonight, while you're asleep, a miracle happens and the problem you came here about is solved. You don't know the miracle has happened. What's the first small thing you'd notice tomorrow morning that told you things were different?' The point isn't fantasy - it's pulling a concrete, observable picture of 'better' out of what can otherwise feel like a vague wish to 'feel less anxious' or 'be happier'.

3

Scaling questions

'On a scale of 0 to 10, where 0 is the worst it's been and 10 is the day after the miracle, where are you today?' Scaling turns a fuzzy sense of stuckness into a number you can track, and the more useful follow-up - 'what's making it a 4 and not a 2?' - surfaces coping and resources you may not have credited yourself with.

4

Finding and amplifying exceptions

Times the problem was absent, smaller, or more manageable, even briefly. What was different about those moments? What did you do, or what was going on around you? The aim is to do more of whatever already moves the number, rather than analysing what moves it in the wrong direction.

5

Small next steps and review

Sessions typically end with a specific, small, achievable task rather than a general intention to 'try harder'. Progress is reviewed against the scale each time, and the course ends by agreement once you're close enough to where you wanted to be.
